A Survey

This has nothing to do with Chloe, Stella & Fred. I'm just curious, would you rather:

Get free college tuition and live at home with your parents
--OR--
Go away to school, rent an apartment with friends, and get student loans?
Enter answers in survey on the side, and comments below -->>>
I want lots of feedback. If you read this please leave a comment. Annonymous comments are welcome. A simple "Stay" or "Go away" will do. But I'd also love explanations, like, "My student loans are stressing me out, if I could go back and do it for free I would." Or, "I loved my college years, living on my own--so FUN! Student loans have great rates anyway." For lots of people the answer is obvious. I want to know what others think.
Thanks

Absolutely no contest- You have a one time opportunity to get on and be on your own in life. You will get married and no more college experience- Every single one of my friends - every single one that stayed at home struggled to make new friends or even get involved with college things- I met tons of new people, had fun, stayed up late, and lived on my own, I am 100% for getting a job during college, taking out loans if needed, applying for scholorships, and enjoying the few years you have!!!

ps, if you are the type of person that will get out and really go meet people and get involved with campus organizations, then I think that person could stay at home and have a good experience- I haven't met anyone that has really done that yet though

Paul's biggest regret is that he didn't move out of his parent's house while he was in college. They only lived a few blocks from USU. He graduated debt free but missed out on a lot of experiences.

I stayed at home and didn't have any problems meeting new people and doing what I wanted (staying out late etc.) My parents let me come and go as I pleased. it was great, free rent, someone always stocking the fridge for you, and even washing your cloths at times. I don't think I would have meet very many more people going away to college then I did staying at home.
However, if there was a school I really wanted to go to and it wasn't at home, definitely move out.

i stayed at home for free and it's always been a big regret of mine that i missed out on the college experience. what i DIDN'T miss out on was the large student loan, so obviously that played into it, but if i could do it all again i would go.

This required NO thought for me. Go away for school! I look back at the 4 years I spent away with absolute happiness. The experiences there would have never happened if I stayed at home. I really don't care if I'm paying student loans for the next 10 years- it was so worth it

Ditto to what Jacqueline said. It was mostly fun but even the not-so-fun-times were worth every penny.

The College life is a priceless experience; besides student loans not only have great rates but the interest is a tax write off!

When else does the government give you a tax break for partying hard?

There is hands down no better way to gain independence than to move aways for school. I will always treasure my college experiences as some of the best in my life. I'm a freak about staying out of debt but I actually think it is worth it for the living away from home experience.

I didn't have a choice, my parents kicked me out and I am so thankful. I plan on doing the same with my kids. Not only is college so great living on your own, but how else do we learn about the real world. Hands down - get a loan, live on your own.

Ok, I just read Dalls comments- as his wife I will tell you more of the truth- as you know I can count the NEW friends he made at college on one hand- Dan- that is about it. Other than that he only hung out with his high school friends, luckily they were good guys. Ranell, his little sister stayed at home the first three years- she had crappy crappy high school friends- She didn't meet anyone new and quit college for a while- then when she started again, I pushed her to move out (making my mother in law very mad) and she is happy now, has new friends, and has a social life and is happy in school. Ok, that is all

Dan? As in Katie's husband? Dalls wouldn't have met him either if Kyle didn't marry me and I wasn't roomates with Katie... see everyone should move out and go to school.

I like what Tresa Said, "Get a loan, live on your own." As a matter of fact, I like it so much that i'm going to picket out side of colleges chanting "Get a loan, live on your own! Get a loan, live on your own!" All of you who voted to go away are welcome to join. If you have better things to do with your life (which I hope you do) or just arent as passionate about it as me then you don't need to come.

Real answer: move out. There isn't a college in Driggs ID, and I ended up with no student debt (besides Kyle's), so my answer is clearly biased BUT, I am the worst of introverts, and I never would have met half the people I did or have half the fun. Here are some of the roommate moments I would have missed out on (in chronological order):

Hitch-hiking with Jordan.

Being pulled down 5th behind a truck while standing on a McDonald's tray. This turned out to be painful.

A massive bonfire of dead leaves in the middle of our parking lot.

Stalking a roommate on a date wearing nylon masks and bikinis (I could not be coerced into participating, but I witnessed... it was bizarre).

Killer spoons and a certain roommate peeing her pants.

Angie's daily "Why you shouldn't go on a mission and marry Kyle instead" story.

There are lots of other reasons for me too, but this is long enough.

Living on my own and paying for college with loans has given me incredible opportunities and experiences. Although it would be awesome to not be $20,000 in debt, it's helped me learn responsibilities and problem solving skills.... (i.e. selling all my furniture to make rent.)

Although I'm all for saving money, nothing compares to living away from home to get some independence and self-suffiency.

Besides, can you imagine having all night video parties at your parent's house or other crazy activites that would obviously get on their nerves? I don't think so.

My college experience was kind of weird- so I don't know if I count- but here's my two cents anyway. I did both on my own freshman and junior years- at home sophomore and senior. At home means better food and people who drop you off for class so you don't have to sell your right arm for a parking spot. Moving out meant things like a Bulgarian roomate who makes weird smelling food and turns your apartment into the off-campus International Center. I think I got (quoting Chloe and Annie) the best of both worlds. So are you going to tell us why the impromptu survey?

I moved out right out of Highschool for a couple years and lived on my own and paid all my own bills. As much as I hate student loans, especially now that I am getting married and have that bill to worry about, it was totally worth it. I learned so much and grew up so much while living away from home and will never have the college experience again. Totally worth every penny!

Nice try but Zach is different than anyone else in your family and he LIKES to be at home (and is treated very differently than Jordan). Jordan was right to leave but Zach will be fine to stay.

coincidentally, i am currently living at home, free, going to school here, and going crazy. so at the beginning of next semester im taking on the student loans, packing my bags, getting two part time jobs, paying rent, and going to live happily out of state..... i have done it before and its definately the way to go as long as you can keep your head on straight and keep your goals in focus.

I would not go to school. I'd invest in game show appreances and gain my knowledge on studying up for them. I'm so good that I'd win, get paid BIG and that way I'd get paid to learn!

so katie really- what does your little bro think about all this

Obviously this has a lot to do with me so I will comment on it. being on a mission made me really miss my family (mainly Mom, dad, nieces and nephews because my siblings, although grown adults still fight like 10 year olds) And that made me want to STAY HOME so that I could be around them. I will also get schooling for free and I will live at home for free and my mom will pay my car insurance (not a bribery, she did it for Jordan for 2 years even though he lived in Provo)Therefore, I will have plenty of time to save up money to TRANSFER some day. Yes I do eventually want to leave and go to school somewhere else. I do want to live on my own and I do want to experience the "college life." I just want to save up some money and get a car mostly paid off before I start taking out school loans. Now don't get on my case for. I made this decision all on my own, no one forced or bribed me. P.S. What Cindy said is very true.

Definitely move out. It's such a transitional time, you need time to grow up and figure things out on your own, and a mission doesn't count in the same way. Everyone needs a little time where the only person she needs to answer to is herself... not parents, not a spouse etc... a little freedom to figure out who you want to be away from people who already see you a certain way. Even if you come full circle, you know you're not doing what you're doing for anyone else. That window of time is so short, so it makes sense to do it while you can, before you're old and weird. Does that make sense? Plus I can't imagine staying in the same town I grew up in, but then again, my home town's a little smaller than most. Sorry Katie's brother!

I vote for staying home in high school, studying hard and getting a scholarship. Then party in college.
